Livestock
Guardian Dogs
In
December of 2009
we suffered our first coyote attack, and
tragically lost one of our Gulf Coast Native sheep, Eli, and our
rescued Cormo
ewe, Esther.
I had been considering and
researching Livestock Guardian Dogs
(LGD’s) for
our flock,
but this event
finally pushed us into action.
I
contacted the Texas Great Pyrenees
Rescue
group and
located a wonderful 13-month old Pyr, who we named Judah.
Judah
took to the farm immediately, and has provided excellent care for the
north
flock.
He vigilantly deters
intruders
day and night with his authoritative bark and his imposing size. Though
he takes his job seriously and is
suspicious of strangers, he has a heart of gold toward the sheep and
his
family.
I’m deeply indebted
to our farm
shareholders, who raised the money to pay his adoption fee.
Soon,
we hope to have another good dog to watch over the
alpacas, sheep, and chickens in the south pasture.
